Meghan Buell and Amy Nini lost their first round match to Toledo Central Catholic's Morgan and Sydney Delp. Central jumped out to 4-0 lead in the first set, closing it out 6-3 as Meghan and Amy picked up some games by improving their consistency. The second set was more even with Central hanging on for a 7-6 (7-3) win.
Maddie Kobelt won her first round match against Massillon Jackson's Trisha Conlan 6-1 6-3 before losing 6-3 7-5 to Kara Sherwood from Mentor. In her first match, Maddie prevailed with her strong serve and by running her opponent side-to-side. Maddie's performance was more versatile and even stronger in the second match, but her opponent was the better player on this Friday afternoon.
Maddie, Meghan and Amy are the first players to represent NAHS in the Division I draw of the girls tennis state championship tournament. Congratulations girls on a good post season run and for your good effort at the state championship tournament.

It was a good weekend for New Albany Girls Tennis players at the OHSAA Central District tournament. Maddie Kobelt, Meghan Buell and Amy Nini qualified for the state championship tournament. Maddie won the singles competition. Meghan and Amy placed third in doubles.
In the singles final, Maddie bested Olentangy Liberty's Alex Power 6-3 6-1 in a rematch of last week's sectional tournament championship match. As the central district singles champion, Maddie earns a #1 seed in the the state championship singles draw. Congratulations Maddie!
After winning last week's sectional doubles championship, Meghan Buell and Amy went 3-1 at the district tournament to finish third. A not so great draw set them up to play their Friday afternoon qualifying match against against Dublin Jerome's Kelly Doran and 2007 Doubles State Champion Kathryn Farrar! After the Jerome team took the first set in a tiebreaker, Meghan and Amy rebounded to win the final two sets 6-2 6-1. Following a 6-2 6-3 loss to Upper Arlington's Cox and Flower on Saturday morning, Amy and Meghan completed the tournament with a solid three set win over the other UA team of Murphy and Richardson 6-3 2-6 6-0. It was great to see Meghan and Amy finishing strong in both of their three set matches!
Maddie, Meghan and Amy will play again on Friday 10/17 as the high school girls tennis post season enters its final weekend with the start of the 2008 state championship tournament at The Ohio State University outdoor varsity courts. This is a great event to experience as a spectator or player (or coach), so come out if you can make it.

The varsity team returned to action with a 4-1 win at Gahanna. It was good to be playing matches again after weather related cancellations on Monday and Tuesday!
Amy Nini made a nice stand at #1 singles. After falling behind 2-5 in the first set, she improved her consistency and made a nice run to take the set away with a decisive win in the tie breaker. Amy never gave up on winning the set and worked hard to make it difficult for her opponent to close it out. Whenever you or your opponents reach a fifth game, recognize that you have something to play for. Leave it to your opponent to let down or lose focus. Instead, be more motivated, more determined, and make your best effort to win every point!!!

Wednesday's matches with Gahanna are on whether or not Gahanna has school. The one change we'll make is that both the JV and varsity match will be away at Gahanna.
We're doing this to avoid a potential problem with Gahanna JV not being able to get a bus if they don't have school. Gahanna has 10 courts, so everything except JV exhibition can start at 4:00. Varsity will happily make room for JV on the team bus to Gahanna which leaves NAHS at 3:30. Coach Roof says JV should meet at 3:15 for snack.
It will be great to have both teams playing at the same place at the same time. I'm looking forward to the best pregame cheer ever!
